About the Program
The AI in Research Operations (AIRO) Leads Program is the flagship initiative of the AI in Research Operations Network (AIRON) — a global community driving responsible, strategic, and impactful AI adoption across the research ecosystem.
Over four immersive weeks, participants design and lead their own AI projects, gaining the skills, confidence, and network to transform ideas into real-world impact.
This isn’t just a training course — it is a hands-on, community-based experience for professionals who are shaping how AI transforms the way research is managed, funded, and supported.
To ensure meaningful engagement and collaboration, each AIRO Leads cohort is limited to 10 participants — creating a small, dynamic group that fosters trust, knowledge exchange, and accelerated idea development.
Why This Program Matters
Across universities and research organisations, AI adoption is often driven by passionate individuals — yet they frequently face:
- Isolation – champions working alone with limited networks.
- Duplication – similar efforts happening in silos.
- Burnout – balancing innovation with demanding day jobs.
- Missed opportunities – ideas not scaled or recognised.
- Ethical blind spots – uncertainty around responsible AI use.
The AIRO Leads Program changes that by connecting local innovators into a global peer network, providing:
- A structured framework to design and deliver AI initiatives.
- Tools and methods to strengthen institutional readiness.
- Recognition and visibility as leaders in AI-enabled research operations.
