The AI in Research Operations Network (AIRON) is a global non-profit initiative advancing the responsible, ethical and effective use of artificial intelligence across research operations and the wider research and innovation ecosystem.

As AI increasingly influences how research is planned, supported and managed, AIRON helps research professionals develop the knowledge, understanding and confidence needed to make informed and responsible decisions about its use.

Through education, professional discussion, community learning and international collaboration, AIRON supports responsible AI adoption while strengthening human judgement and evidence-informed practice.

What We Do

AIRON advances its mission through:

• educational webinars, events and professional discussions
• the AIRO Leads cohort-based learning programme, which runs periodically
• the State of AI in Research Operations survey and related learning activities
• regional and thematic peer-learning groups
• blogs, newsletters and educational communications
• international community and knowledge exchange.

Our activities encourage critical thinking and responsible practice. AIRON does not promote particular AI products, technologies or commercial interests.

Who We Support

AIRON brings together people involved in research and innovation internationally, including research managers and administrators, researchers, research-support professionals, funders, universities, research institutes and professional organisations.

Membership is not required to participate in AIRON’s public events and activities.

Public Benefit

AIRON aims to make learning about responsible AI adoption accessible to the wider research community.

AIRON provides free public events and learning opportunities alongside educational programmes that may charge a fee to support their delivery and sustainability. Where resources allow, reduced-fee or subsidised participation may be offered to widen access.

Any income generated through AIRON’s nonprofit activities is used to further AIRON’s mission and public-benefit activities.

Leadership and Governance

AIRON is led by its Founder and Chair, Anna Aston, and supported by an international Board providing strategic oversight, financial stewardship and organisational guidance.
